I realize this may be a stretch, maybe this kind of story doesn't even lend itself well to written prose at all.īut having very much enjoyed these sort of bizarre, whimsically surreal and dream-like game experiences where the protagonist is lost alone in a shifting mental labyrinth that doesn't seem to obey any rules (or the rules frequently change, sometimes spitefully), I'm just wondering if there are many books that play in this same space? It sits among other games-as-art favorites, for me, like Spiritfarer, Ori and the Blind Forest, The Room, Celeste, and Myst. Highly recommend grabbing this game if you’ve got a couple bucks and an afternoon to burn. I’ve never played a game that had a warning for dissociation and derealization before, so I thought it was just a schlocky quip. You go in thinking you’re ok and by the end you’ve learned something about yourself. The jazz bleeding into lofi soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to the oneiroturgic rabbit hole of continuously escalating puzzles and paranoia. The puzzles themselves are not super challenging but are also not so simple that I didn’t need to look up one or two of them. I think that’s an incorrect comparison: Portal and Superliminal don’t share much beyond being first-person puzzlers. I picked up Superliminal on Switch after seeing it mentioned on a few threads as a similar experience to Portal. ![]()
